How separately collected waste is turned into raw materials

Clean R recycles an average of 50,000 tonnes of plastics and packaging a year, preventing it from going to a landfill. Around 25,000 tonnes of materials (plastics, metal, etc.) are recovered by sorting municipal waste at the Vides resursu centrs plant located at the Getliņi landfill. Clean R’s sorting center for separated packaging re-sorts additional 25,000 tonnes of material annually.

1

Clean R is an environment-conscious service company that provides a full range of waste management services. We offer separate collection of various waste (paper, plastic, metal) and glass from our clients.

2

The separately collected waste is delivered to the Clean R sorting centers in Riga in 5 Vietalvas Street and 8e Spilves Street. In total, both centers handle around 70 tonnes of packaging daily.

  • At the beginning all separately collected material is fed on the conveyor line, where it is screened through disk screen which removes small particles and impurities like small glass cullets, shredded material and material which is unable to pick up manually.
  • Afterwards material flow is diverted to manual sorting process where non-recyclable materials are separated from recyclable raw materials.
  • When all that is recyclable is removed from material flow, residue is taken to Vides Resursu Centrs, a Clean R municipal waste sorting plant located in Getliņi, where the remains from the separately collected materials are converted in high value SRF (solid recovered fuel).
  • At our sorting centers, dry recyclable packaging is collected from the sorting conveyors and sorted in separate bins, then baled and sent to recycling facilities in Europe, US, and Asia. We sort cardboard boxes, newspapers, office paper, different type and color PET bottles, transparent and colored LDPE film, HDPE materials, aluminum packaging, etc.

About 2% of the sorted material is recycled in Latvia, while 98% is exported to the EU, US, Asia, and other markets for further processing.

4

Starting from 2022, all recyclable plastic materials, such as LDPE, HDPE, and PP plastics, after proper sorting at the Clean R sorting centers, are sent for recycling to the Clean R polymer processing plant in Ķekava, where the sorted material is recycled in pellets, granules, and flakes to be used as a raw material in factories to create new items like plastic bottles, packaging film, containers, and sacks, etc.

Clean R

Cutting-edge technology, modern manufacturing, reliable partner

The Clean R polymer processing plant is the most modern plastics recycling plant in the Baltics, with a capacity to process 8,800 tonnes of plastics annually. We use machinery by Erema, a global industry leader. The Erema extruder with double filtration system is an innovative, modern, and sustainability-oriented piece of equipment that makes plastics recycling innovative and efficient. The Clean R polymer processing plant specializes in recycling LDPE film, HDPE plastic, and PP big-bags, producing HDPE regrind flakes and pellets, as well as LDPE pellets that are further used to make everyday items and products. The plant operates 24/7. It processes 8,800 tonnes of raw materials every year. The production line consists of 30 different units.

Quality management

Product purity management starts from the very first stage when the raw material enters the plant and passes washing lines, until our blending machines with a capacity of 12 tons generate highly homogenous regrind or pellets. The Clean R recycling regrind or pellets are continuously tested and classified on the test film-blow extruder. Before delivery, every shipment passes quality control.

Processing procedure

The plastic packaging waste is sorted again by removing impurities not suitable for recycling, washed, shredded, and dried by using the latest technology. The obtained mixture is processed by using advanced recycling machinery, which saves time and turns plastic packaging waste into a highly valuable granulated raw material.

HDPE flakes are obtained by recycling rigid plastics (cans, bottles) and used to make pallets, waste containers, and other products.

Light-colored LDPE pellets are obtained from transparent film. LDPE pellets are an extrusion material used to make polyethylene film. These pellets are most used to manufacture food packaging.

Dark LDPE pellets are obtained from dark-colored film and used packaging bags. LDPE pellets are an extrusion material used to make polyethylene film. These pellets are most often used to make different color bin liners.

Grey/mixed PP pellets are produced by recycling polypropylene bags.

Clean R Tehnology

Market

The Clean R polymer processing plant takes part in the global market. It processes material collected in Latvia as well as material imported from the EU, US, Asia, and South America. 99% of the finish products are exported to the EU, US, China, and South America.
